Gina Lugo

South University’s mission is to provide educational opportunities for the intellectual, social, and professional development of a diverse student population. When Gina Lugo was researching schools, that mission drew her attention. As a first-generation Latina student, Gina wanted a place that appreciated diversity. She also previously struggled with school. For college, she sought faculty who would support her learning needs.

South University, Tampa was a great fit. “The teachers pushed me towards completion. They never doubted me on any level and accommodated my learning style,” says Gina.
Gina holds not one but two degrees from our Tampa campus. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Health in 2021. Her Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Healthcare Administration followed in 2023.

“I chose the MBA in Healthcare Administration because it combines business expertise with specialized knowledge of healthcare systems,” she explains. “It equips professionals to navigate the unique challenges of managing healthcare organizations effectively. I enjoy the grit and tenacity it takes to overcome challenges in healthcare and business.”

While in school, Gina served as a Control Room Operator for the Manatee County Sheriff's Office. She has also worked in probation and medical assisting. Additionally, Gina supports several local nonprofits.

Recently, Gina has been helping shape South University’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). This plan aims to teach students resilience for overcoming adversity and achieving academic success. Gina has been active on the QEP Development and Implementation Plan Committee, giving our students and graduates a voice. She has contributed valuable insights and leadership in this role. As part of the committee, she helped outline the plan steps, set a timeline, and decide how to measure and report results.

“Gina's actions reflect her deep pride and loyalty to South University. Her ongoing support and involvement in university initiatives highlight her continued dedication to her alma mater,” says Mandy Smith, Committee Director. “Gina's enthusiasm for serving and bettering South University is evident in all she does. She serves as an inspiration to both current students and fellow alumni.”

Our Tampa campus is pleased to honor Gina with the 2024 Alumni Achievement Award. The award recognizes her contributions to our university and her professional and academic success.
