When Melissa Evita Neris-Soto decided to pursue a degree as a working professional and mother, finding a school and program that offered flexibility was a must. “A former coworker of mine attended South University and informed me of its benefits for adults who not only have a family but work full time,” Melissa shares. “I chose South University because I saw that this University wanted me to succeed and make my goals into a reality.”

After being out of school for years and working in healthcare and health education since 2008, Melissa was inspired by her son to enroll in a Psychology program. “He was diagnosed with autism, and I felt that I wanted to not only understand the disorder but make an impact,” she says. “[I want to] help other families and motivate those who have obstacles but need support.”

Melissa successfully completed her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2022 from South University, Tampa. As is true for many students, the path to her degree wasn’t without its challenges. After starting her program, Melissa lost her father to pancreatic cancer in 2017. “I was grieving his loss and, as a result, was losing my passion to continue my studies,” she admits. “However, with the support of my professors and the other staff, I honored my father by finishing my courses and walking on that stage to accept my degree.”

She describes the path to her degree as a long road, but Melissa is confident that hard work and dedication pay off. Already, she believes her education is offering returns in her career. “South University has great educators and resources that I was able to use to advance my career and extend my knowledge,” she states.

Now, Melissa has returned to South University, Tampa to pursue a second degree—a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Healthcare Administration—which she hopes to complete in 2024.

Outside of her school, work, and family, Melissa is active in her community and has volunteered with organizations like Autism Speaks, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and Lupus Foundation of America, Inc.
