Since graduating in 2009 from South University’s online programs Master of Science in Criminal Justice program, Tonia C. McMillan’s career has evolved and grown significantly. A 2023 South University Online Alumni Achievement Award winner, Tonia currently works as Vice President of Human Resources Strategy and Shared Services at Amtrak. While she’s no longer focused on criminal justice, Tonia says her education played a large part in her career growth.
“My experience at South University helped prepare me for the executive role I hold today [including] managing conflict, expanding my problem-solving skills, and thinking with a strategic focus,” she shares.
Tonia chose South University for its flexible online program offering after hearing about the school from family members who lived in Savannah. At the time, she was working in the behavioral health field with patients who were mandated by the court system to receive treatments for substance abuse and/or mental health issues. In this role, she collaborated closely with treatment agencies, community organizations, probation and parole, and the department of social services.
Tonia already held a bachelor’s degree in behavioral sciences with a human resources minor. Next, she wanted to grow her knowledge in South University’s online criminal justice master’s degree program. “My instructors were amazing. Many of them worked directly in the field of criminal justice and provided real life scenarios as part of the curriculum and course content*,” Tonia shares. “This made the content more relatable and transferable within my field of work.”
Beyond the professional focus of the instructors and classes, Tonia valued the support and empathy she received as a student. “South University focuses on helping you achieve academic excellence. Every professor took the time to explain the course content in a way that was understandable for all of their students,” she says. “They cared about you as a person, not just a student.”
After graduating, Tonia’s responsibilities grew as she took on supervisory and regional executive director roles. She oversaw staff and operations, implemented clinical policies and procedures, managed community relations, and ensured compliance with state and federal regulations. Eventually, Tonia joined Amtrak as a Drug and Alcohol Compliance Manager. Over time, she worked her way up into her current position as Vice President of HR Strategy and Shared Services.
At Amtrak, Tonia has received a Leadership Capability award on developing talent. She also created an employee resource group focused on employee mental health and wellbeing. In spring 2023, Tonia spoke about change management at an industry event in Orlando. Outside of work, Tonia is active in the community, including volunteering at a local food bank.
We’re proud that Tonia is a South University graduate and congratulate her for receiving the 2023 South University Online Alumni Achievement Award!
